What Is a Bisexual Haircut?

The bisexual haircut is a short bob that has become synonymous with bisexuality. It’s a shorter haircut, which gives it a tomboyish quality, but it’s long enough to satisfy conventional expectations of women’s hairstyles.

Bisexual bobs can be any length, but they tend to fall between chin and shoulder length. They are also usually paired with short, side-swept bangs.

In addition to being incredibly flattering, the bangs help add a more feminine touch, preventing it from looking too harsh while still allowing for plenty of androgynous edge.

The cute young woman confidently rocks one of our favorite bisexual haircuts, a trendy haircut often worn by bisexual women that are comfortable in their own skin.

Where Did the Bisexual Bob Come From?

Interestingly, the first mention of the bisexual bob dates back to a Tumblr post. An eagle-eyed user noticed three of the most prominent bisexual characters all sported the same haircut.

Other commenters added to the thread, showing a trend among movie, cartoon, and TV show characters. Eventually, even actors and celebrities started taking part in the movement and started sporting the short haircut (i.e., the bisexual bob haircut) shortly after coming out.

With her straight hair styled into a bisexual bob, the young woman embraces a unique and inclusive hairstyle celebrated by bi ladies.

What Are Some Famous Bisexual Bob Examples?

Now you can confidently say that you know what a bisexual bob is and where it came from, but you might be wondering if you’ve ever come across it.

In this section, we’ll look at some of the most well-known pop culture examples of a bisexual bob. We’ll also discuss various aspects of the show, so be careful if you want to avoid spoilers.

  • Korra from Avatar: The Legend of Korra - The Legend of Korra is the second entry in the Avatar The Last Airbender universe. Like most avatars, Korra has a fluid sexuality and expresses interest in both male and female cast members. Although Korra starts the series with three long ponytails, she ends the short with a short, choppy bob.
  • Annalise Keating from How to Get Away With Murder - How to Get Away With Murder is a thrilling legal drama centered around the exploits of a brilliant criminal defense lawyer. During the course of a few seasons, Annalise engages in romantic relationships with both men and women. Annalise’s bob is unique since she eventually reveals it to be a wig. Underneath the hairpiece, she sports a natural TWA.
  • Marceline from Adventure Time - If you haven’t seen it, Adventure Time is one of the best cartoons to debut in the past few decades. It features a colorful cast of characters, including the vampire Marceline. At first, Marceline is seen wearing her locks in long, straight layers. But after developing a relationship with Princess Bubblegum, she trades in her long locks for a short bob with bangs.
The young woman's bisexual bob cut reflects her identity as a bi woman, showcasing her connection to the LGBTQ+ community.

How to Get a Bisexual Haircut

The bisexual haircut is quickly becoming one of the most iconic hairstyles in popular culture, and the good news is that it’s a relatively simple cut that even beginners can pull off.

We’ll walk you through the steps below:

Wash and Dry Your Hair

Most experts agree it's better to cut your hair while it’s clean and dry. That will give you the most accurate results and prevent any leftover product, oil, or dirt from ruining your scissors.

So to begin your bisexual haircut, wash your hair with your favorite shampoo and conditioner. Then, you can either wait for your hair to air dry or use a blow dryer to speed things up.

Block Out Your Bob

Bobs are a shorter cut, so you’ll first want to block out your basic shape. To do that, cut your hair slightly longer than you want your finished bob to be. Don’t worry if your cut doesn’t come out perfectly even.

You’ll go back later and fine-tune things. Doing it this way will help save you a ton of time, so you can focus on getting your final cut just right.

Rocking a traditional bob, the young woman proudly displays her support for queer women and embraces her own sense of style.

Touch Up Your Bob

After your initial cut, your ends are probably uneven and choppy. In this step, you’ll go back and ensure everything looks smooth. Make small cuts and gradually bring your ends to the same level.

Use a mirror to help you touch up the hard-to-see areas like your back and sides. Once you’re satisfied with the cut, brush or comb your hair to remove the cut hairs.

Soften the Ends

Hold your scissors vertically and make careful, even cuts up into your ends to thin them without removing too much length. It’ll also prevent your bob from looking blunt, which would give it more of a 60s mod vibe.

You’ll need to be careful not to thin your ends too much, so move on to the section after two or three snips. Make your way around your head until you’ve covered all of your ends.

With her shorter hair transformed into a stunning bisexual bob, the young woman exudes confidence and celebrates her sexual preferences with pride.

Cut Your Bangs

Now that your bob is finished, it’s time to work on your bangs. First, make a triangle part in the crown of your head, and comb the hair forward. Use a hair tie to pull the rest of your strands back so they don’t get in your way.

Bangs can drastically change your face shape, so take your time figuring out how you want your bangs to fall. Once you decide, grab your bangs between your index and pointer finger. Hold them out, and use your hair shears to trim them to length.

Style Your Bob

Cutting your bisexual bob is only one part of the process. You’ll also have to learn how to style it. Luckily, there are a ton of different ways to do that. You can wear your bob straight and sleek or throw in some curls and soft waves. You can also slick your bob straight back to create an edgy, androgynous look.

The young woman's bisexual bob, edging dangerously close to her jaw level, accentuates her facial features and adds a touch of boldness to her long hair.

Who Should Get a Bisexual Bob?

Although it's called a bisexual bob, you don’t need to be a bisexual woman to wear one. You also don’t need to be a woman, despite it being considered a feminine cut. Plenty of bisexual men have experimented with a bisexual bob at one point or another.

The cut itself is pretty much universally flattering and looks great on virtually any face or hair type. Additionally, the bangs help soften the cut and give it a softer feel.

If the typical bisexual bob doesn’t work for you as is, you can just tweak it!

Try making your bob longer or shorter until you reach the perfect length. You can also omit the bangs or swap them out for a more flattering fringe. Either way, a bisexual bob is a great haircut for anyone who wants to rock it.
