The Label Key: A Hair Ingredient Checker for Your Curls
The Label Key is a free hair ingredient checker built for curly hair. Snap a photo of the ingredient list on any bottle, or paste it in, and you’ll get six plain-English answers and one verdict for your hair: keep it, demote it, repurpose it, let it go, or test it.
First, tell me about your curls
The same product can be right for one head of hair and wrong for another. Set this once, and every verdict below uses it. Your answers stay in this browser and are never sent anywhere.
Paste the ingredient list
The full list off the back of your bottle, in the order it’s printed. Order matters here, so don’t tidy it. Commas, semicolons, or new lines all work. If there is an ingredient we cannot read, we keep a note of the name so we can add it. Nothing else leaves your browser.
Point your camera at the ingredient list on the back of the bottle. The photo is read on your own phone and never leaves it, so there’s nothing for us to store.
Paste or snap the ingredient list first.
Your keep list
Builds as you go, and stays here if you close the tab. Print this page when you’re done and tape it inside the cabinet door.
Where the chemistry comes from. Ingredient functions are standard cosmetic formulation, not opinion. The coconut oil finding is Rele and Mohile, Journal of Cosmetic Science 2003, which found coconut oil reduced protein loss in damaged and undamaged hair, whereas mineral oil and sunflower oil didn't.
Where it stops. A label tells you what’s in a bottle and roughly how much. It can’t tell you the exact percentage, and it can’t tell you how your hair will feel on Saturday. Treat every verdict as an informed starting point, then let The One-Variable Test settle it.
Two things I won’t pretend to know. The dew-point rule for glycerin is what wearers report, not a published finding. And there’s no controlled evidence behind “protein overload” as a mechanism, so this tool goes on what your hair is doing rather than on a theory about why.
Free, and it stays free
Know someone with a full cabinet?
She’ll read her first label in about a minute, on her phone, standing in the store. There’s nothing to sign up for, and it reads her hair the same way it reads yours.
